While many traditional audiophiles have long sworn by physical media like vinyl and CDs, the sheer convenience and library management capabilities of high-end network streamers are becoming impossible to ignore. Even the most die-hard purists are integrating digital streamers into their setups to meet diverse listening needs. However, the market is currently flooded with streamers that suffer from clunky software or limited connectivity.
Enter the FIIO S15 Desktop Streamer and DAC. While FIIO is historically renowned for its exceptional desktop headphone amplifiers, the S15 represents a bold leap into the living room and dedicated listening spaces. Designed explicitly for two-channel speaker setups, the S15 aims to be the ultimate, uncompromised audio hub for your home.
At the heart of the S15 lies a flagship DAC combination from AKM: the AK4191EQ and AK4499EX. This architecture innovatively separates the digital and analog signal processing into two distinct chips. The AK4191EQ handles the digital filtering and Delta-Sigma modulation, while the AK4499EX utilizes a switched-resistor design exclusively for digital-to-analog conversion. This complete physical separation ensures absolute signal purity.
This powerhouse combo allows the S15 to effortlessly decode PCM up to 384kHz/32bit and DSD256. To further eliminate phase noise and jitter, FIIO implemented dual ACCUSILICON AS318-B femtosecond crystal oscillators (clocked at 45.1584MHz and 49.1520MHz), guaranteeing a pristine and transparent sound signature.
Under the hood, the S15 is driven by a Snapdragon 660 processor, a Qualcomm QCC5125 Bluetooth chip, and a 16-core XMOS XU316. But where it truly shines is its rear panel.
The S15 is a connectivity monster. It supports network streaming, local playback, Bluetooth, Apple AirPlay, USB Audio, USB Host, Optical, Coaxial, and AES/EBU inputs.
High-Res Inputs: The AES/EBU and Coaxial ports support up to 384kHz/24bit PCM and DSD128 (via DoP).
I2S via HDMI: It even includes an I2S port supporting 24bit/192kHz PCM, featuring 4 selectable pin configurations to ensure compatibility with almost any external DAC on the market.
External SSD Enclosure: A brilliant design choice is the inclusion of a hot-swappable external M.2 SSD caddy connected via USB-C 3.0. You can easily expand your local library or share high-res files with friends without ever needing to unscrew the chassis.

For output, the S15 features dual RCA (Unbalanced) and a pair of XLR (Balanced) outputs, doubling as a highly capable pre-amplifier. In fixed line-out mode, it outputs 2.4Vrms (RCA) and 4.8Vrms (XLR). Switch to Pre-Amp mode, and the voltage practically doubles to 4.5Vrms (RCA) and 8.9Vrms (XLR)—providing massive, clean gain perfectly suited for driving active monitors or dedicated power amplifiers in a 2.2 channel configuration.
Running on a customized, open Android 12 OS, the S15 features a stunning 7.84-inch touchscreen flanked by tactile physical knobs and buttons.
FIIO provides multiple ways to interact with your music:
Direct Interaction: Use the ultra-responsive touchscreen and physical knobs when sitting at your desk.
Bluetooth Remote: Perfect for sitting on the couch, allowing you to control playback, volume, and add tracks to favorites without line-of-sight limitations.
FIIO Control App: For the ultimate couch-listening experience, the app offers screen-mirroring capabilities. You can browse your entire NAS library over the local network and control the S15 directly from your smartphone, just as if you were touching the device itself.
We integrated the S15 into a system featuring Monitor Audio Gold 100 6G bookshelf speakers.
Firing up an SACD ISO of Bach: Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, the S15 immediately showcased its resolving power. The upper-frequency extension was incredibly natural and sweet, capturing the delicate friction of the bow against the strings with stunning texture and elasticity. After a standard burn-in period, the soundstage opened up even further, delivering pinpoint imaging and a buttery-smooth musicality.
Transitioning to a DSD file of the legendary Jazz at the Pawnshop, the S15 revealed a pitch-black background. This "dead silent" noise floor allowed the piano notes to resonate with tactile weight and presence. The subtle background noises of the venue—the clinking glasses and audience murmurs—were perfectly separated from the main instruments, creating a holographic depth. The S15 doesn't just play music; it successfully recreates the live atmosphere, bringing the smoky, passionate essence of the jazz club right into your listening room.
The FIIO S15 is more than just a digital player; it is a meticulously engineered audio hub that bridges the gap between convenience and hardcore audiophile performance. With its flagship DAC architecture, massive pre-amp voltage, and intuitive user interface, the S15 stands out as a top-tier choice for anyone looking to build a serious modern Hi-Fi system.
