Sonos Beam Ultra vs Beam Gen 2: Should You Upgrade?

, к EMiUZEK Editorial Team, 6 мин время чтения

Compare Sonos Beam Ultra and Beam Gen 2 by Atmos design, dialogue control, Bluetooth, room fit and upgrade value before deciding whether to wait or buy.

Sonos Beam Ultra is the meaningful upgrade over Beam (Gen 2) for buyers who want stronger spatial presentation, real upward-firing drivers, Bluetooth and more advanced dialogue control in a compact soundbar. Existing Beam owners who are satisfied with virtual Dolby Atmos, dialogue clarity and their current Sonos surrounds do not automatically need to replace it. The decision depends on room size, TV connection, listening priorities and the cost of completing the system.

What changed from Beam Gen 2?

Beam (Gen 2) creates Dolby Atmos height effects through processing. Beam Ultra uses a larger nine-amplifier acoustic architecture with five tweeters, four low-profile woofers and two upward-firing tweeters. Sonos describes the result as a 7.1.2 presentation. That distinction matters most with Atmos movies in rooms where the ceiling can reflect height information effectively.

Beam Ultra also adds Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3 and four levels of AI Speech Enhancement. Beam (Gen 2) already supports HDMI eARC, Dolby Atmos, Trueplay, Speech Enhancement, Night Sound, AirPlay 2 and voice control, so the new model is an expansion rather than a correction of a missing basic feature.

Dedicated height drivers are the biggest reason to upgrade

The older Beam can decode compatible Dolby Atmos formats, but it relies on psychoacoustic processing rather than upward-firing speakers. Beam Ultra sends part of the signal upward so that a suitable ceiling can create a more physical sense of elevation. This does not guarantee dramatic overhead sound in every room. Very high, vaulted or heavily absorptive ceilings reduce the reflection effect, while a conventional flat ceiling at moderate height is more favorable.

Content matters too. A stereo television program will not become a native Atmos mix. The improvement should be judged with well-produced Atmos material and level-matched playback, not by switching to the new bar at a louder volume.

Dialogue and nighttime listening

Beam Ultra introduces AI Speech Enhancement with four selectable levels. This is potentially valuable for viewers who frequently raise the volume to understand dialogue, share a room with background noise or watch late at night. It is not the same as a dedicated center channel that can be adjusted independently in a traditional AV receiver system, but it gives users more control than the single enhancement setting on Beam (Gen 2).

Before upgrading solely for dialogue, test the current Beam with Speech Enhancement enabled, confirm the TV is sending a supported digital format and check whether furniture blocks the front grille. Night Sound can reduce the gap between quiet speech and loud effects. If those steps solve the problem, replacement may offer less value than expected.

Bluetooth changes everyday use

Beam Ultra supports Bluetooth 5.3, making it easier for guests or devices outside the normal Sonos workflow to play audio directly. Beam (Gen 2) is primarily a Wi-Fi, AirPlay 2 and Sonos-app product. Bluetooth is convenient, but it should not be confused with a guaranteed quality upgrade. Network playback remains preferable for stable whole-home grouping and can avoid some Bluetooth codec and range limitations.

Both models retain AirPlay 2 and the broader Sonos ecosystem. If everyone in the household already uses the Sonos app, Spotify Connect or AirPlay, Bluetooth may be a minor addition. For mixed Android and guest use, it can remove friction.

Check the TV before ordering

Both soundbars connect through HDMI eARC or ARC. For the best chance of receiving lossless multichannel formats, use a television with eARC and enable its passthrough setting. A basic ARC connection can still carry Dolby Digital Plus Atmos, but television behavior varies. Verify that the TV can pass the formats used by your console, disc player or streaming box.

Sonos lists Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos variants, multichannel PCM and DTS Digital Surround among Beam Ultra's supported formats, with eARC required for the higher-bandwidth options. A soundbar does not add missing passthrough capability to the television. If the TV converts everything to stereo or introduces lip-sync problems, diagnose that path before replacing a working Beam.

Room size and system expansion

Beam Ultra is 750 mm wide, compared with about 651 mm for Beam (Gen 2), but it remains much smaller than Sonos Arc Ultra. It is aimed at buyers who want stronger immersion without putting a full-width flagship soundbar under the television. Larger rooms and seating spread across a wide sofa may still benefit more from Arc Ultra.

Either Beam can become the center of a larger Sonos home-theater system. Adding a Sonos Sub Mini changes low-frequency headroom and impact more than many source tweaks. Rear speakers improve envelopment more consistently than expecting one front soundbar to reproduce every surround cue. Read our Sonos multiroom setup guide before deciding how many rooms or speakers the system should include.

Who should upgrade from Beam Gen 2?

Upgrade when dedicated height drivers, Bluetooth, stronger dialogue adjustment and the wider acoustic layout address problems you actually experience. It makes the most sense for frequent Atmos viewing, a compatible flat-ceiling room and a television with reliable eARC. Buyers starting a new compact home-theater system should also consider Beam Ultra first if the budget comfortably covers it.

Keep Sonos Beam Gen 2 when it already fills the room, dialogue is clear and the system is used mainly for television, music or virtual Atmos. Adding surrounds or a subwoofer may create a larger improvement. Beam Gen 2 also remains a rational lower-cost entry into Sonos rather than an obsolete product.

Should you wait for Beam Ultra?

Sonos announced Beam Ultra on September 1, 2026, opened official pre-orders at $699 and stated general availability would begin September 29. Availability, pricing and warranty terms can differ by market. EMIUZEK does not currently have a verified Beam Ultra preorder product page, so this article does not provide a purchase link or claim local stock.

If you need a soundbar immediately, the active Beam Gen 2 listing remains the simpler option. If height effects, Bluetooth and enhanced dialogue are central requirements, waiting until regional stock and support terms are confirmed is sensible. Do not buy on specifications alone: confirm the TV connection, room geometry and whether the additional cost would be better spent on a subwoofer or surrounds.

Final decision

Beam Ultra is a substantial compact-soundbar update, especially because its upward-firing drivers change how Atmos is produced. It is best for a new premium compact system or a Beam owner with clear limitations in immersion, connectivity or dialogue control. Beam Gen 2 remains enough for smaller rooms and satisfied owners, and system expansion can deliver a more obvious benefit than replacing the bar alone.

The practical order is simple: verify TV eARC and formats, identify the problem in the current system, compare the cost of Beam Ultra with adding Sub Mini or surrounds, and wait for confirmed regional availability when warranty support matters.
