The biggest differences compared with the K17 are the DAC configuration, DSP hardware, and some power-related specifications. The K15 keeps the overall FiiO desktop design philosophy while adjusting certain components for better price efficiency.

FiiO K15 vs K17: Main Differences

The K15 and K17 share a similar appearance, but there are several important differences.

1. DAC Section

  • The K15 uses: Dual AK4497S DAC chips

Compared with the K17, the K15 provides slightly less refinement in:

  • Overall resolution

  • Sound density

  • Smoothness

However, the performance difference is smaller than the price difference.

2. EQ and PEQ FunctionFiiO K15 and K17 rear panel layout comparison showing USB optical coaxial ethernet and RS232 ports

The K15 supports parametric EQ adjustment, but its implementation differs from the K17. The EQ configuration requires connection to a computer through the rear control interface and uses FiiO’s DSP software/web interface for adjustment.

Users can modify:

  • Frequency

  • Gain

  • Q value

The settings can then be stored on the device. Although the K17 provides a more advanced DSP experience, the K15 still offers enough flexibility for most headphone users.

3. Output Power

  • Single-ended: 1400mW @32Ω / 180mW @300Ω

  • Balanced: 3000mW @32Ω / 700mW @300Ω

This is enough power for most modern headphones. The K17 still has an advantage with extremely demanding headphones, but the K15 already exceeds what many users need on a desktop system.

Sound Performance

The FiiO K15 has a sound signature that can be described as balanced, slightly warm, clean, and slightly energetic in the upper frequencies. It does not focus on an overly warm or romantic presentation. Instead, it emphasizes clarity, detail, speed, and separation.

Bass Performance

The K15 provides a clean and controlled low-frequency presentation.

  • The bass characteristics are: Fast response, tight control, and good texture.

Compared with the K17, the K15 has slightly less sub-bass depth, bass atmosphere, and warmth. The K17 delivers a fuller and smoother low-frequency experience, while the K15 sounds more precise and energetic.

Midrange and Vocal Performance

The K15 delivers clear and detailed vocals.

  • The advantages include: Good positioning, strong separation, and clear vocal texture.

Compared with the K17, vocals are slightly thinner and less warm. The K17 presents more density and emotional weight, while the K15 focuses more on transparency and cleanliness.

Treble Performance

The K15 has a slightly brighter and more forward treble presentation.

  • Advantages: Good extension, clear instrument detail, and a strong sense of air.

For listeners who enjoy a more detailed and energetic sound, this tuning can be attractive. However, pairing with already bright headphones should be considered carefully.

Soundstage and Imaging

The K15 performs well in:

  • Stereo separation

  • Imaging accuracy

  • Instrument positioning

The soundstage is wide and organized. Compared with the K17, the K15 has slightly less depth and immersion, but overall performance remains impressive for its class.

Headphone Pairing Guide

The K15 works particularly well with:

  • Neutral headphones

  • Warm headphones

  • Slightly dark headphones

Its cleaner and more energetic presentation can improve clarity, transparency, and detail retrieval. For bright headphones, the combination may become more aggressive, so careful matching is recommended.

Final Verdict: Is FiiO K15 Worth Buying?

The FiiO K15 successfully brings many elements of the K17 experience into a more affordable category.

  • The K17 remains the more refined model, offering: Smoother sound, greater density, and more advanced internal hardware.

  • The K15 focuses on: Strong value, premium design, powerful output, flexible connectivity, and practical EQ customization.

The biggest difference between the two is not the appearance, but the sound character. The K17 sounds smoother and more relaxed, while the K15 sounds cleaner, brighter, and more energetic.

For listeners looking for a complete desktop DAC/amp solution without moving into flagship pricing, the FiiO K15 is an excellent value choice. It delivers a large portion of the K17 experience while maintaining a more accessible price point.

September 2026 Firmware Update: What V155 and V95 Change

FiiO released K15 SOC firmware V155 and MCU firmware V95 on September 16, 2026. This is a meaningful update for buyers who want the K15 to operate as more than a USB DAC. Local playback now supports access to NAS servers, while streaming mode adds QPlay. The update also adds customizable FN1, FN2 and FN3 remote buttons and a Disable LO option in system settings.

The decoder library was updated to address CUE track splitting, OGG playback and PNG or BMP cover-art display. FiiO also lists fixes for album art that failed to refresh during AirPlay track changes and noise that could occur when EQ was enabled while streaming MQA through Roon. Other operating modes can now show the app playback home page when the current FiiO Control app is installed.

Update both firmware components

FiiO specifically instructs owners to install MCU firmware V95 after updating the SOC firmware to V155. Do not treat the two packages as alternatives. Keep the K15 powered during each update, follow FiiO's official sequence and confirm both version numbers before judging a feature as missing.

Does the firmware change the buying decision?

The update strengthens the K15 for listeners with a NAS library, QPlay source or remote-heavy desktop system. It does not increase amplifier power or turn the K15 into a different DAC architecture. If you mainly use USB from one computer, the new functions are useful but not a reason to replace a working DAC. If you want one desktop hub for local files, network playback, headphones and active speakers, the update makes the K15 more complete. The FiiO K15 product page shows the currently available configurations.
